Finding new ways to help Members succeed drives this Health Partner every day

A career working with incarcerated youth, as well as adults facing addiction and mental-health issues, taught social worker Kathleen Fiorini how to listen — and how to help someone move toward positive change. Now as a MissionPoint Health Partner, she is able to use her natural empathy and problem-solving skills every day.

“I work alongside two other Health Partners who have nursing backgrounds, so we are able to help Members in a wide variety of ways,” Kathleen says. “Some Members are referred to us, while others reach out on their own for assistance. Whatever their needs or concerns are, we get right to work seeing how we can help resolve the problem, or answer the question.”

Years of working with mental health and addiction means that Kathleen has lots of experience and an affinity for anyone dealing with those issues. Over time she has learned how to access community resources of all kinds, including mental health counseling and substance abuse treatment programs. That means Members can expect some “out of the box” thinking when they work with her.

“I enjoy finding resources for people who are just exhausted from trying on their own,” she says. “Sometimes it takes a lot of follow-through, and people don’t have the time, or the ability, to do that on their own. Because I am talking with them one on one, we can work together to find a solution, and that is very satisfying to me.”

New day, new challenges

Tackling new challenges is an opportunity for Kathleen, she says, and because MissionPoint Members have varying needs, she’s able to broaden her skill set with every interaction.

“You never know where the day’s going to take you,” she explains. “If I’m reaching out to someone, I may not know how they will receive me. Our Members are very open to us, but they want to know that they’re going to be understood, that no one is going to judge them, for what’s going on. I make sure that anyone I talk to knows that I’m here to help them live their best life, and to support them in the journey from where they are to whatever that life might look like.”

What drives MissionPoint Health Partners like Kathleen is the ability to provide new opportunities for Members and share in their successes.

“When Members realize I want to help them achieve their full health potential, they get very excited,” Kathleen says. “We get just as excited as they do when we see that they’ve made progress in overcoming their greatest obstacles.”
